Peaceful and undisturbed sleep is crucial for an expecting mother and her baby. If you sleep well, the baby can grow well. This is something that doctors also always stress during consultations with pregnant women.
Let’s understand how different sleeping positions impact your state of pregnancy:
Sleeping on the left side
This is one of the best sleeping positions for pregnant women. It allows optimum blood flow from the inferior vena cava (IVC), which is the vein that carries blood to your heart. Sleeping on the left side does not put pressure on your liver and kidneys. Therefore, your feet, hands, and ankles do not have to face any swelling issues.
Sleeping on the right side
You can try this sleeping position during your pregnancy journey in the first 3 months. It is a safe sleeping position, and if you feel comfortable, there’s no reason not to opt for it.
Sleeping on the back
During the first trimester, sleeping on the back is regarded as safe. But it may later lead to back pain, digestive issues, and problems in blood circulation. Sleeping on the back must be avoided in the later stages of pregnancy.
First Trimester
Any sleeping position is fine as long as you get good sleep. You can keep a pillow between your legs to offer more comfort to your hips and lower body.
Second Trimester
Sleeping on your sides is fine in the second trimester when your uterus starts growing. Make sure that your mattress is firm to prevent your back from sagging.
Third Trimester
Sleeping on the left side is ideal in the third semester when the belly is bigger. Proper blood flow to the baby will help keep up its healthy growth.
